Coinbase Hires prominent Facebook veteran

Coinbase Hires Facebook and Twitter Veteran as Communications VP

Cryptocurrency startup Coinbase released a public statement on Monday that it has hired a new vice president of communications.

Rachael Horwitz joins the cryptocurrency exchange company from one of Coinbase investors known as Spark Capital. She earlier held high-level communications roles at Twitter and Facebook.

Horwitz took to her LinkedIn page to write that she’s Incredibly excited an grateful to join Coinbase as the company’s Vice President of Communications. Adding that Coinbase is an “amazing company with a terrific story to tell,” and she’s ready to start work immediately.

In an interview with Recode, Horwitz said that the size and buzz around Coinbase make her remember her days at Twitter, which she first joined in 2011. However, she admitted that the role could pose some serious challenges, given that the public – and even some Coinbase users – is mostly perplexed by digital assets.

“The range of individuals who are apparently reading about this stuff, seeing it in their feeds and seeing it in headlines but don’t understand where we’re at in the history of all this,” Horwitz said. “There’s a tremendous educational challenge.”

In recent weeks, Horwitz is the newest executives to join Coinbase’s ranks.

In March, the company hired Emily Choi as vice president of corporate and business development – strongly indicating that the firm was eyeing takeovers – and in the same month, it hired Eric Scro as vice president of finance. To beef up the startup’s customer service resources in January, Tina Bhatnagar joined as vice president of operations and technology.
